Learn About Volunteering…

Can I complete my community service hours through SC?

  • Yes. We provide volunteer opportunities for school, church and most community service requirements. We are unable to provide service hours for the offense of violence. Requests to volunteer for service hours will not be approved until our online application is completed. Sharing Connections is an ALL or NOTHING volunteer site. This means credit hours will not be provided unless the full agreed upon total is completed.

Do I need to be at Sharing Connections the whole day, from 9am-3pm?

  • No, you do not need to volunteer from 9am-3pm, although some of our volunteers do work the whole day (with a break for lunch!). Usually, our volunteers work part of a day, such as 9am-Noon, Noon-3pm, or whatever other time frame that works for you!

What should I wear to volunteer in the warehouse?

  • Warehouse volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes. The warehouse can get very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter, so dress accordingly.

Are children allowed to volunteer?

  • Kids must be at least 14 years of age to volunteer without adult supervision. Children 12-13 years of age can volunteer when accompanied by an adult and can volunteer, at maximum, three hours. Due to a warehouse setting, children under age 12 are encouraged to participate in personal care, cleaning supply or group collections that can be managed off site.

What duties are requested of a volunteer?

  • We are looking for happy and energetic individuals interested in assisting us in sorting donations (like clothing and housewares), assisting donors at our drop off door, working direct with clients to select needed furniture, assisting in cleaning and vacuuming furniture, organizing furniture and drivers/helpers on our volunteer run truck.
  • Regardless of the duty selected, every new volunteer is paired with one of our friendly experienced volunteers or staff members to get a better understanding of each role.

“Our group from Kansas City had a blast volunteering with Sharing Connections! The staff was so organized and kept our group of high schoolers busy and productive! We did it all...from helping organize the warehouse, unloading a truck of furniture, re-upholstering chairs, folding hundreds of towels with Lois and assisting clients picking out their selections...the time we served flew by because we were having so much fun! We love and so appreciate what Sharing Connections is doing for their community! Can't wait to serve again soon! Thanks Sharing Connections!”

Take Our Dresser Challenge!

The perfect group project for team building - great for company staff “giving back” initiatives. We simply suggest a $200 donation to cover the cost of each dresser kit we purchase and then the fun begins. Dresser build can be completed at your location or here at Sharing Connections.

From church groups to businesses, we love sharing what we do by providing group opportunities. Great group projects like team building dresser builds, special events and more.

  • Large groups with individuals between the ages of 12-14 need adult supervision to attend.
  • Maximum individuals per on-site group project is 20-25.
  • Groups over 25 are encouraged to participate in collections to benefit Sharing Connections clients.

If you have a group or team and would like to pre-schedule a volunteer day, contact us today by selecting the button below or call us at 630-971-0565.

"Getting the keys to your first apartment and not being able to afford a bed to sleep in or a kitchen table and chairs where you can eat breakfast, do homework, pay bills, or read a newspaper is something many of us can never even begin to imagine. Being part of this magical organization that helps someone fill an empty apartment with everything needed to create their long-awaited home is something that I never in a million years dreamed I’d be a part of, but I am so glad I am."

Group Collections…

GROUP PROJECTS ARE GREAT FOR YOUTH & ADULT GROUPS!

If your schedule does not allow you to come into the warehouse to volunteer, but you still want to have a direct impact on the families Sharing Connections serves, take a look at our service projects! These are also ideal volunteer projects for younger kids. Simply decide which project your group will do, collect the items for the project, assemble the items as described below and deliver them to Sharing Connections. Your group can even tour of the warehouse when your group drops off their project.
